While designing the mural I chatted to and photographed residents and members of various community groups in Ashfield. Together they provide a snapshot of Ashfield’s layered waves of migration - from the Polish, Italian, Greek, Lebanese and Turkish migrants of the mid to late 20th century to the more recent Chinese, South East Asia and Indian migrants. I wanted to show the resilience of the people of Ashfield who face the challenge of holding onto their own cultures and traditions whilst living alongside so many others and also forging their own Australian identity.
